The Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS) was founded in 1965 after the 1963 Skopje catastrophic earthquake, with extensive support given by UNESCO and upon resolution made by the Government of the Republic of Macedonia. It was the first institution of this kind in Europe and is presently one of the oldest institutes of this type worldwide. In the beginning, the primary goal of the Institute was to train engineers to become earthquake professionals to provide assistance to the reconstruction of the city and design seismically resistant structures. It therefore organized the first international post-graduate studies in this field as early as 1965.
The lectures at these studies were held by doyens in earthquake engineering from the USA, Japan, Russia, India and New Zealand. For more than fifty years of its existence, the strategic orientation of the Institute has been basic and applied research, education and training in the field of performance-based earthquake engineering and seismology. It has also actively been involved in the development and improvement of technical regulations, laboratory and field testing for earthquake risk reduction, seismic monitoring and disaster forecasting, promotion of risk prevention culture and raising of community awareness, consulting services in design of important structures in Macedonia and beyond, etc. It has organized international courses, seminars, workshops and international conferences. It has also developed and maintained the Macedonian strong motion network.
The laboratories, the offices, the lecture rooms and the premises of IZIIS cover 8500 m2. The Dynamic Testing Laboratory is equipped with a state-of-the art 5 component shaking table as well as other sophisticated testing equipment. The entire compound is located in a beautiful surrounding, on the foothills of Vodno mountain.
Today, the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS) is a leading institution and a Centre of Excellence in its field both in Macedonia and at a global level.
